Tourism in Tripura

In spite of being mostly a hilly territory, most of the population of Tripura lives in the plains. It is one of the most ancient of India's princely states. The small state is however big in sense of its tourism aspects. There are many tourist attractions in Tripura that varies from the monuments to historical sites, nature and wildlife to parks and museums and to the ancient temples.

The state is bounded by Bangladesh from north, south and northwest. Blessed with beautiful lakes, rivers and forests, Tripura is worth visiting. The state has a number of historical and cultural significant places. The historically famous Ujjayanta Palace, Neer mahal, Kunjaban, Malancha niwas, Pilak, Tripura Government Museum are the pride of Tripura.

The religious spots and temples in Tripura include Tripura Sundari Temple, Unakoti, Fourteen Goddess Temple, Bhuvaneswari Temple, Vishnu temple, Nager Dol, Hari temple, Gopinath Temple, Mahamuni Pagoda and Benuban vihar, among others. The Jampui hill, Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary, Rowa Wildlife Sanctuary, Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary, and Eco Parks add to the attraction of the state in terms of its nature and wildlife sanctuaries.

Agartala



Agartala

The capital of Tripura is located very close to Bangladesh. Agartala is a legendary place very rich in flora and fauna. The town gained a lot of importance when Maharaja Krishna Manikya set up his capital here in the 19th century. It is the commercial center of the entire state. Agartala has some of the greatest tourist attractions in Tripura which are Kunjaban Palace, Puratan Agartala, Umamaheshwar temple, Jagannath temple, Ravindra Kanan and Buddha Mandir.

Deotamura



Deotamura

It is a sacred place of Tripura due to the presence of rock-cut sculptures which are besides the river Gomati. Deotamura literally means "God's peak" and also called Devtamura. It is popular amongst the devotees for there are a lot of hills here which are wonderfully carved with images and are known as chabimura. It dates back to 15th and 16th century AD.

Kumarghat



Kumarghat

Known for its extensive cultivation of pineapple, Kumarghat is one of the top tourist destinations in Tripura due to the presence of a good number of tourism spots here. It is at a distance of around 140 kms away from Agartala. Sightseeing places in Kumarghat are Ujjavanta Palace, Neermahal, Venuban Vihar and Kamala Sagar.

Udaipur



Udaipur

Located at a distance of 55 kms from Agartala, Udaipur is a major tourist attraction in Tripura. It is the headquarters of South Tripura District. Udaipur is famous for its temples. Famous temples in Udaipur are Sundri temple and Bhubaneswari temple apart from Sepahijala-the wildlife sanctuary.

Historical Places in Tripura

One of the seven sister states of India, Tripura has a host of historical sites and monuments. Ujjayanta Palace, Kunjaban Palace, Malancha Niwas, Neermahal and Pilak are the pride of Tripura. Tripura Government Museum is situated in Agartala in Tripura. The most important monuments and historical sites of Tripura are:

Ujjayanta Palace



Ujjayanta Palace

Ujjayanta Palace is a royal house in the capital city of Agartala. The Palace, built by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya during 1889-1901, extends over an area of about 1 km. It is a two storied mansion, having a mixed type of architecture with three high domes, the central one being 86 feet high. The palace is set with huge Mughal style gardens, beautified by pools and gardens and tiled floors.

Kunjaban Palace

Kunjaban Palace is at a distance of about 1 km from Ujjayanat Palace. The sub-urban Palace was built by Maharaja Birendra Kishore Maniyka during 1909-1923. Poet Rabindranath Tagore resided in the eastern apartment of this palace during his 7th and last visit to the state in 1926. The southern side of the garden is open for the public and has been named as ‘Rabindra Kanan’.

Malancha Niwas

Malancha Niwas ia a bungalow adjacent to Kunjaban palace situated on a hillock. The Malancha Niwas earlier was a kaccha house but when the place was constructed, it was given the name of Malancha Niwas.

Pilak


Pilak

Pilak is at a distance of about 100 km from Agartala. Pilak is the treasure house of Hindu and Buddhist Sculpture. It dates back to 8th and 9th centuries. Beautiful images scattered over an area of about 10 sq. km. have been found at Pilak.

Neermahal


Neermahal

Neermahal is the only lake palace in eastern India. The palace was constructed in the 1930 by Maharaja Birbikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur. The construction of the palace was undertaken by Martin & Burn Co. The palace is built in the middle of a natural lake called Rudrasagar.

Boxnagar

This place emerged during a recent denudation of a natural forest area. This is the ruins of a brick built building in the northwestern part of Sonamura sub division on the edge of the border with Bangladesh. This place is located at a distance of 32 kms from Agartala and around 8 kms from Sonamura.

The Boxnagar market is located near to this place. The local people initially attributed the remains to the ancient temple of Manassa-the Goddess of Snake. When this site came into the notice of Archaeological Department, they took over the site and currently preservation and excavation is going on any ancient ruins.

Unakoti



Unakoti

The Unakoti is the ‘Shaiba’ pilgrimage place which dates back to 7th-9th century. Marvelous rock carvings can be seen here. The rock carvings and stone images are some of the historic remnants which have amazing legendary stories of its own. The central Shiva and gigantic Ganesha figures deserve special mention here for it is piece of work flawlessly beautiful. ‘Unakotiswara Kal Bhairava’ which is the central Shiva measures 30 feet in height. A mela is held every year in Unakoti known as the ‘Ashokastami Mela’ which is visited by thousands of pilgrims.

Wildlife Sanctuaries and Peaks in Tripura

Tripura is a naturally beautiful place. There are many wildlife sanctuaries in Tripura. in Tripura are located many ecoparks. Sepahijala wildlife sanctuary, Rowa wildlife sanctuary and Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary are some of the wildlife sanctuaries in Tripura.

Sepahijala is a wildlife sanctuary in Tripura. The wildlife sanctuary is 25 km from Agartala on Agartala Udaipur main road. More than 150 species of residential birds, migratory birds, orchid garden, boating facilities, wild life, botanical garden, zoo, elephant joy-rides, rubber and coffee plantation attracts the visitors. The famous spectacled monkey is found here.

Trishna Wild Life Sanctuary

Trishna Wild Life Sanctuary is located at about 100 Km. away from Agartala in Belonia Subdivision of South Tripura District. The main attraction in this sanctuary is the Bison.

The Gomati Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the south Tripura district. The sanctuary is filled with varied flora and fauna. There are as a many as 230 different varieties of plant species in this sanctuary. the Gumti and Khowai rivers that flow through the sanctuary offers virgin areas for people to explore, hence it is a paradise for adventure seekers. A very important feature of the sanctuary is that it prevents soil erosion in the area. Animals like bison, elephants, wild goat, barking deer and sambar can be found here apart from others.

Rowa Wildlife Sanctuary

Rowa Wildlife Sanctuary can be approached from the Panisagar area via the highway and is easily accessible to visitors since it is a small sanctuary. it is treasure for botanists for a lot of plant species can be found here which can be used for research purpose. Above 150 species of animals, birds and primates can be found here. The entire 86 hectares of the forest is fenced and taken over by the forest department who look into it and try to preserve its entities.

Jampui hill is the highest hill range situated 90 km from Kailashahar. Jampui is called the eternal hills of spring. Jampui hill is known for its exotic scenic beauty. Orange plantations of the Jampui hills are famous throughout India. Jampui hill is situated 250 km from Agartala.

Parks and Lakes in Tripura

Kalapania Eco Park

The Kalapania Eco Park is situated in the Sabroom sub division of Tripura. The park was developed over a period of seven years since 2000.

Baramura Eco Park

The Baramura Eco Park is situated about 37 kms from the state capital Agartala in the Baramura hill range. It is an area surrounded by sylvan green forest with a stream flowing through it. The park is an ideal destination for eco lovers.

Tepania Eco Park

The Tepania Eco Park is located in Tepania Gram Panchayat under Matabari RD block. This park is a major tourist destination and is situated around 5 kms from Udaipur and 45 kms from Agartala.

Khumlwng Eco Park

The Khumlwng Eco Park is situated around 25 kms from Agartala in Khumlwng. Khumlwng means the valley of flowers. The park has a beautiful spacious garden along with a natural water body with boating facilities. There is also a children’s park in it.

Nehru Park

This park was inaugurated in the year 2003 and is situated in front of Aranya Bhawan, the headquarters of the forest department. There are varied floral species and garden with seating spaces for the visitors. It is located in Agartala.

Heritage Park

Spread over in an area of twelve acre, the Heritage park is located in Agartala, on the northern side of the Raj Bhawan. The park was inaugurated in the year 2012 by the then Chief Minister of Tripura. The park is a wonderful place to relax and walk around the periphery of the park which measures to 1.1 kms.

Rabindra Kanan

Located in the south of Raj Bhawan, the Rabindra Kanan is a beautiful park filled with greenery and budding flowers. It is a spot of attraction not only for the adults but also the children. The adults can enjoy the serenity of the place whereas the children can have fun in the ‘puppet house’ of the park.

Kamala Sagar Lake

In the 15th century, a lake was excavated by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya which came to be known as Kamala Sagar Lake. A temple of Goddess Kali lay beside the lake and the lake is a popular picbnic spot as well.

Dumboor Lake

A tabour shaped lake lies 120 kms. away from Agartala known as Dumboor Lake. The name is attained from the tabour shaped drum of Lord Shiva which is known as the ‘Dumboor’. The lake is surrounded by beautiful greenery and vegetation with 48 islands lying in the midst of the lake. River Gomati originates from a Hydel project that exists near the lake. This place of iriginating of river Gomati is called ‘Tirthamukh’ and 'Poush Sankranti Mela' is held every year on 14th January in this place. Birds of various species can be found here.

Rudrasagar Lake

The Rudrasagar lake is located 55 kms. away from Agartala. The lake in which Neermahal is located is the Rudrasagar Lake. The lake attracts a lot of migratory birds every year and boating is an activity tourists can enjoy here.

Museums in Tripura

Tripura Government Museum

The Tripura Government Museum in Agartala was established in the year 1970. The museum houses some of the rare stone images, old coins, and archaeological articles from Tripura. The museum also houses some exquisite pieces of stone and other archeological items excavated from the neighbouring places. This is the most ideal place to see and know about the culture and tradition of Tripura's past and present.

Nazrul Kalashetra

Nazrul Kalashetra is a cultural complex located near Purbasa by the Jail road. It is a sophisticated auditorium consisting of a screening hall, library and a labarotory for film development.
